5 Common Causes of Website Errors and How to Solve Them

There are nearly two billion websites on the internet today. Since more than 500,000 new websites appear each day, this number will continue to grow rapidly. If you own one of these billions of websites, chances are you’ve encountered a few common website errors.

Fixing website problems means understanding what common website errors mean. Continue reading below to learn five of the most causes of these errors and how to solve them.

1. Too Much Traffic

How much traffic is too much will depend on numerous factors. The capabilities of your website server are the primary consideration. When your site receives too much traffic, it can crash or cause countless other issues.

One way to solve this problem is to use a network traffic routing distributor. This can layer a high-availability network-as-a-service over your existing server. You can see here for additional information on this solution.

2. HTTP Errors

HTTP errors mean the software server has gone down. This can happen for numerous reasons, ranging from too much traffic to hacking attempts and everything between.

If you have this error, resetting and updating the server should help. However, a server reset won’t solve this issue in a few rare cases. If this is the case, you may need professional assistance to solve the error.

3. Error 404

This error usually comes up with “page not found.” This means you can’t view the page you’re attempting to reach.

The easiest fix for this is to check your page’s settings and verify it isn’t set to hidden, private, or password protected. While you’re there, you can also verify the page exists and wasn’t accidentally saved as a draft.

4. Error 408

An error 408 means the request timed out. This problem can stem from your website server, or it can be something on your client’s end.

If multiple clients are reporting issues, the problem is your server. You should try to reset the server or, if necessary, update it to the most current version. If only one client is reporting issues, you can disregard this error because it’s a problem on their end.

5. Broken Links

Broken links can happen from a few different things. How you fix it will depend on the root problem.

A link can be “broken” if it has any errors in the address. If this is the case, fixing the typos or grammatical errors can solve the issue.

Links can also be broken because that specific page or website no longer exists. These links should be deleted or replaced as necessary.
